Chapter 18

“Well, I don’t like him. I think he’s a dick,” Stu said, not ashamed of his opinion of Devon.

“Something about him … yeah, there’s just something,” Bob agreed.

Sitting comfortably on the sofa at the studio, his foot resting against the coffee table in front of him, Jadon listened to the comments about Devon. He was enjoying the unanimous disdain he was hearing from the band. He sat relaxed, running his fingers through Bob’s wavy, auburn fur.

Having grabbed Bobby out of Meg’s car before it hardly reached a stop that morning, Chick ushered him quickly into the passenger seat of his BMW, wanting to make certain Bob would be at the studio all day. Bob’s love was infectious. All who met him, loved him. Some, just wanting a pair of receptive, forgiving ears to talk into. Some, wanting the energy only a dog can provide. Energy that says, no matter how crazy life seems, it’ll be okay. But Chick had a motive. Jadon lit up when Bob was around. Chick knew that whenever Bob was near, Jadon would once again resemble an intact, glued together person. Without Bob or Meg, he was empty. It was an emptiness that filled the space around Jadon wherever he went.

Amused with the negative judgments thrown around the room regarding Devon, Jadon kept cooing at Bob, all the while agreeing silently within himself at every sneer and snort of dislike.

“What the hell do you think of the guy?” Stu blurted, looking toward Jadon.

Slowly lifting his head, Jadon looked at Stu, then at the others who were waiting for his response.

Everyone except Chick was eager to hear Jadon’s take on Devon. Knowing his feelings for Meg, they couldn’t help but think he would have more to share on the subject.

“I’m sure Jadon feels like the rest of us. Ya know. So what, Devon’s a creep,” Chick interjected, trying to accomplish two things in the process. One, releasing Jadon from the obligation to answer. Two, prevent everyone from discussing the elephant in the room that had become a new member of the band since Jadon’s eyes met Meg’s.

“Wonder what Meg thinks of him?” Kofi said.

“I Googled the fucker last night,” Stu grunted.

“Since when do you Google anything?” Bob asked.

“I’m on all the time. God, I’m on YouTube like a fly at a picnic, buzzing around, hoppin’ from one video to the next. They got this one …”

“Well, what did you find out?” Bob interrupted.

“Well, it seems our little friend Devon Mitchell Hathaway is one rich motherfucker. Yeah, his family has big … big money,” Stu said.

Jadon rolled his eyes, not happy with the first nugget of information Stu doled out.

“Let’s see …,” Stu said, pulling a cigarette from the pack tucked in his pocket, taking the moment to mull over his findings from the other night, enjoying the suspense he was able to provide in the process. “His family owns the Hathaway Grand Hotels. They’re all over the world.”

Chick sighed with displeasure, “Those are nice hotels. Hate to tell ya but, uh, we’re stayin’ in one while in London.
